Artificial turf and hardscaping in Saratoga Springs, Utah

Saratoga Springs is almost entirely newer construction, which means a lot of dirt backyards waiting on a first landscape. It also sits on the west shore of Utah Lake, and the wind coming across the water is a real design factor rather than a footnote.

What is different about Saratoga Springs yards

Wind off the lake is a design input

Open west-shore lots catch consistent wind. It affects where a patio is actually comfortable to sit, whether a fire feature is usable, and how much a shade structure needs to be anchored. We look at prevailing exposure before picking a patio location.

New backfill is still settling

On a house that is a few years old, the backfill around the foundation has not finished compacting. Building right up against the house without accounting for that gives you a patio that develops a low spot toward the foundation, which is the worst possible direction.

Blank-slate yards should get a full plan first

When there is nothing there yet, the temptation is to install turf across the whole thing and figure out the rest later. That usually means cutting turf back out within two years. A layout first costs nothing and saves that.

Saratoga Springs questions

My whole backyard is dirt. Is that easier or harder?

Easier, and usually cheaper — there is no lawn to demo and haul off. The main variable is how well the builder's fill was compacted.

Is wind a problem for turf?

Not for properly secured turf. It matters more for patio comfort, umbrellas, shade structures, and fire features.
