What this actually costs*

Most contractor sites will not put a number anywhere. That is not helpful. Here is the range we work in, what a whole yard tends to land at, and exactly what pushes your job to the top or bottom of it.

What a yard costs© 2026

Start here

A per-square-foot rate is hard to turn into “what will my backyard cost”. These are whole-project ranges for the jobs we do most.

Up to 500 sq ft

Small yard or side yard

$5,000 – $12,000

Side yards, dog runs, a front strip, or the patch that never grew in. Turf, decorative rock, or a mix of both.

800 – 1,500 sq ft

Typical backyard

$13,000 – $26,000

The most common job we do. Demo, full base build, and turf — plus rock or borders where the yard calls for them.

300 – 600 sq ft

Backyard putting green

$9,500 – $21,500

Contoured base, cups and flags, chipping fringe. Prices higher per foot than lawn turf.

Whole backyard

Full turf + hardscape build

$24,000 – $54,000+

Patio, seat wall or fire feature, turf zones, decorative rock and drainage planned as one project. Larger lots and walls run above this.

Line by line

If you already know your square footage, these are the rates behind the project numbers above.

WorkTypical rangeWhat it includes
Artificial turf, standard landscape$13 – $19per sq ft installedDemo, excavation, fabric, crushed and refined granite base compacted in lifts, edging, seaming, infill and cleanup.
Pet turf / dog run$14 – $22per sq ft installedDeeper open-graded drainage base and zeolite or antimicrobial infill instead of plain sand.
Putting green$24 – $36per sq ft installedBase shaping for real break, regulation cups and sleeves, fringe, and speed tuning after install.
Decorative rock / xeriscape$4 – $9per sq ft installedWeed fabric, edging, and rock delivered and spread to depth. Boulder placement is quoted on top.
Paver patio$26 – $40per sq ft installedMoves with paver selection, pattern complexity, cuts, and excavation depth.
Retaining wall$55 – $110per face sq ftIncludes drainage gravel and drain line behind the wall. Engineering and permits are extra wherever the city requires them — in Draper that is nearly any wall on a slope.
Fire pit / seat wall$4,200 – $11,000per featureBuilt in matching paver or stone. Gas line, where wanted, is quoted separately.
Demo & haul-off$1.80 – $4.20per sq ftRemoving sod, rock, or old concrete. A bare dirt yard skips this entirely.
  • Ranges assume a standard residential yard with reasonable access and no existing drainage failure.
  • Turf rates are all-in installed — there is no separate charge for base material, infill, or edging.
  • Steep lots, rock at shallow depth, and gates under about 36 inches all push a job toward the top of its range.
  • We do not take jobs under about $5,000. Below that, setup and haul-off swallow the budget.

What moves the number© 2026

Six things, roughly in order of impact

If two bids on the same yard are thousands apart, the answer is almost always somewhere in this list.

Demo and haul-off

Removing sod, rock, old concrete, or failed turf is labour plus dump fees. A bare dirt yard skips this entirely and is meaningfully cheaper.

Base depth

Heavy clay subgrade means deeper excavation, more base material, and more compaction time. We also use a screened, free-draining base rather than standard road base, which costs more per yard and is the reason the ground underneath keeps draining instead of pooling and shifting. It is the least visible line item and the one that decides whether the yard is still flat in five years.

Access

If a machine fits through the gate, the job is machine work. If it does not, the same job becomes wheelbarrow work and the labour line goes up sharply.

Drainage

Yards that already have a water problem need it solved before anything gets built on top. Sometimes that is a simple regrade; sometimes it is a drain line and a discharge point.

Turf product

Pile height, face weight, backing and warranty all vary. The exclusive lines we install sit above a builder-grade roll, and that difference shows up in both the quote and how the yard looks in year seven.

Square footage

Bigger jobs price better per square foot. Mobilisation, demo setup, and equipment are largely fixed costs spread across the whole yard.

Minimum project

$5,000

Below roughly this, mobilisation, demo setup and haul-off swallow the budget and you do not get a yard worth the money. We will tell you that on the phone rather than after a site visit.

Questions© 2026

Common questions

What areas do you serve?

Most of our work is in Utah County — Orem, Provo, Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain and Spanish Fork — and we regularly head north into the Salt Lake valley and east toward Park City and Heber. If you are anywhere in that stretch, ask. We would rather tell you yes or no on the phone than have you guess.

How much does artificial turf cost in Utah?

It is priced per square foot installed, and the honest answer is that the range is wide because demo, base depth, access, and turf product move it more than square footage does. Our pricing page walks through what actually drives the number, and a free on-site measurement gets you a real one.

How fast can you get to my yard?

We usually get back to you within the hour during business hours, and we can typically get out for a measurement within a few days. Install scheduling depends on the season — spring and early summer book out furthest.

Who actually does the installation?

ROCK + BLADE designs, quotes, and project-manages the work. Installation is performed by our licensed installation partner, FRDM Turf. You get one point of contact — us — from the first call through the final walkthrough.

Do you offer a warranty?

Turf carries the manufacturer's warranty against UV degradation and fading, and the installation itself is warranted separately. We will put both in writing on your quote so there is no ambiguity about what is covered.

Is artificial turf worth it in Utah?

It depends on what you are replacing. If you are pouring water and weekends into a lawn that still goes brown in August, or fighting mud from dogs, or trying to grow grass in deep shade, the math is straightforward. If you have a healthy lawn you enjoy maintaining, it is a harder case to make and we will tell you that.
