Artificial turf and hardscaping in Cottonwood Heights, Utah
Sitting at the mouth of two canyons is the defining fact about building here. Spring runoff arrives with real volume and a route already chosen, and any yard built across that route without a plan for water becomes a drainage problem rather than a backyard.

What is different about Cottonwood Heights yards
Plan drainage for the peak, not the average
Canyon-mouth properties see concentrated snowmelt rather than a gentle spring. Sizing drainage for a typical rain shower is how you end up with water in a window well in April. We look at where water already goes across the whole lot before designing anything on top of it.
Rocky subgrade is normal here
Alluvial ground at the canyon mouths means cobble and rock at depth. It affects excavation time, equipment and haul-off volume, and it is far cheaper to find during the measurement than midway through the dig.
Slope across the lot
Most of these yards fall noticeably from back to front. Terracing gets you usable space, and the fall has to be worked with rather than fought — a patio that drains toward the house is the one mistake there is no cheap fix for.
Snow and deicing salt
Closer to the canyons means more snow and more salt on walkways. Rock salt is hard on some paver and stone surfaces over repeated winters, and we will tell you which products to keep off the job.

Will spring runoff damage a paver patio?
Not if the base and drainage were built for it. Runoff damages surfaces that trap water or sit across a flow path with nowhere for it to go, which is a design question rather than a materials one.
Do you build retaining walls here?
Frequently — most of these lots need some terracing to get flat, usable space. Drainage gravel and a drain line behind the wall matter more here than almost anywhere, because there is more water moving through the ground.
